About Vovinam

Vovinam is a type of Vietnamese martial arts. Vovinam Viet Vo Dao is a martial art designed for self defense, health and personal development.

Vovinam is practiced with and without weapons. It is based on the principle of harmony between hard and soft. It includes training of the body as well as the mind. It uses force and reaction of the opponent. The name is derived from Vo (Võ): "Martial Arts" and Vinam' stands for "Vietnam".

The wide range of techniques include using hands, elbows, kicks, throws, escape and levering, as well as forms and wrestling. Both attack and defense techniques are trained, just as foot techniques, forms, combat with weapons and traditional wrestling. Self defense techniques cover defense against weaponless attacks like choking from behind or grabbing and against attacks with knife or sword.

Advanced students learn to combine the techniques and learn to defend himself/herself against armed opponents. Instructors train traditional weapons like the long stick, short stick, knife, sword, machette, broadsword, con staff, axe, folding fan, sabre, and other weapons. Thereby the weapons serve as training devices for reaching optimal body control. A high level of concentration is necessary for these.

Vovinam News: Conference To Setup Vietnam Vovinam Federation

Vietnam Vovinam Federation (VVF) was officially setup on October 19 in Saigon to promote the martial art domestically and also to pave the way for establishing the World Vovinam Federation and eventually joining the Olympic.

The first-term executive committee of the federation will focus on building up its clubs at both provincial and district levels nationwide, making the sport part of school curriculum, and introducing it into the Asian Indoor Games 2009.

At the conference, 37 board of directors for VVF were selected. Below are the VVF President, Vice-Presidents, and Secretary:

Vovinam Austin Martial Arts Academy First Belt Exam

On September 1 and 2, 2007, Vovinam Austin Martial Arts Academy administered its first Belt Exam for the Blue Belt 1and Self-Defense classes. On September 23, 2007, Vovinam Austin Martial Arts Academy held its first Vovinam Vow and Belt Promotion Ceremony.

Vovinam Tân Bình and Phú Thọ Celebrated Mid-Autumn Festival

At 6 PM on September 22, 2007 at the Sports Center in District Tân Bình, Saigon, Vietnam, Master Khanh Chí Nguyễn and Master Hùng Văn Lê celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival for the Vovinam kids with lots of prize contests such as lantern contest, tug of war, etc... Then Vovinam disciples performed martial arts demonstrations for the parents and guests to enjoy.

Summary of the International Vovinam Viet Vo Dao Conference: The Setup of World Vovinam Federation and Vovinam Expansion Plan Timeline

Meeting Date: July 22, 2007

Summary of Meeting:

-Attended representatives standardized the plan for Vovinam expansion from now until 2009, and signed the Proposed Plan Agreement regarding the setup of the World Vovinam Federation.

-Standardized the topics and/or contents of the first conference regarding the laws/regulations and requirements of the World Vovinam Federation. The main topics are as follows: the headquarter of the World Vovinam Federation will reside in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, pursue in organizing the official world Vovinam championships, world Vovinam youth championships, and other international Vovinam championships, organize the training for the referees and the coaches/instructors for the international level, pursue the introduction, expansion, and promotion of Vovinam in order to introduce Vovinam as an official sports in the regional, continental, and international olympics and/or championships like SEA Games, Asian Games-Asiad, Asian Indoor Games, Olympic, etc.

The good news is that Vovinam already has 5 countries within the region participated in 3rd World Vovinam Viet Vo Dao Championship 2007. Those countries are Thailand, Cambodia, Philipines, Singapore, and Uzbekistan.

Latest news: Vovinam was chosen as an official sport at the Asian Indoor Games 2009 to be hosted by Viet Nam.

Vovinam News: Vovinam at 2009 Asian Indoor Games

The chances of Vietnamese martial arts Vovinam being part of the Asian Indoor Games became bright after the Olympic Council of Asia gave its conditional acceptance together with some simple requirements.

Wei Jizhong, chairman of the OCA's sports committee, said vovinam's inclusion in the 2009 Asian Indoor Games, to be held in Vietnam, would be endorsed if the country established an international federation and a domestic federation recognized by the OCA.

Vovinam News: Vietnam to set up national federation for homegrown martial arts

Vietnam plans to set up a national federation for vovinam, a martial art developed by a local man, in July to prepare for hosting a world championship in July.

The Vietnam Vovinam Federation (VVF) will be established by July 10-15, just ahead of the third World Vovinam Championship scheduled to be held July 20-22 in Ho Chi Minh City.

Hanoi sets up own Vovinam martial arts federation

The first-ever provincial Vovinam federation has been set up in Hanoi, a pioneer in Vietnam, to lay a foundation for strong development of the homegrown marital art.

The Hanoi Vovinam Federation was officially established on April 8, 2007 at Van Ho exhibit center in ceremony, where Master Pham Quang Long called the sport ‘very popular’, with hundreds of thousands of enthusiasts training globally every day.

Today, I am very pleased to receive the delegations of disciples from many countries, coming to Vietnam to participate in the 3rd Vovinam Viet Vo Dao World Championships in Ho Chi Minh City.

On this occasion, I would like to talk briefly about the educational direction in Vovinam - Việt Võ Đạo. The main educational notion of our martial art discipline can be clearly represented by the three words VIỆT - VÕ - ĐẠO. Of these words, VÕ (martial arts) is the strong point, ĐẠO (the way) is the point of excellence and VIỆT (for Vietnam) is the fundamental point, the root, the source, and the place where Vovinam - Việt Võ Đạo was created. Vovinam News: Vietnam to host World Vovinam Championship

The 3rd World Vovinam Viet Vo Dao Championship 2007 will take place in HCM City on July 20-21. Related sides are also preparing for the establishment of the International Vovinam Federation.

The tournament will be held at the Phu Tho Sports House with the participation of 215 athletes from 21 countries and territories: Australia, Belgium, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Morocco, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Sweden, the Netherlands, Thailand, the US, Uzbekistan and host Vietnam. Athletes will compete in two events: performance and one-on-one.
